I just met Rob Wang, a computer vision researcher who recently graduated from MIT. He’s showed me a video of a two-camera gesture tracking system that is able to track a users thumbs (and by extension, hands) above a black desk surface. No other special hardware needed.
He is moving out to the Bay Area to work on the technology. He has some demos of a slightly different technology based on a multicolored glove online at his website, 3Gear
Doug Densmore from cidarlab at BU pointed me at another biology-related multitouch project taking place at Wellesley, a project they call g-nome surfer. Doug’s iGEM team this year (2011) is going to collaborate with them. Here’s their ACM paper about it.
The Bangalore iGEM 2010 team built a multitouch box along with a lot of other jugaad hardware.
BioTISCH: the interactive molecular biology lab bench

Wow! A European team has implemented a lot of similar ideas for an augmented reality lab bench. I’m excited to read their paper.
